What is the London Taster Course Programme?

The London Taster Course Programme aims to provide students, looking towards starting university in September 2012 (currently in year 12) with a taste of what life at a university in London is like.

Through your chosen course you will experience the different teaching methods used by university academics and gain an insight into the additional facilities available, whilst meeting students from across the UK.

You can choose a course from a variety of subjects within 22 university institutions, including courses organised by The Careers Group, University of London. Courses range from voice and drama, to medicine and nursing, to computing and business.

Well done to all sixth form for their politeness to Gill, our cafe manager! Particularly thanks to Alex Flynn and Jay Jervis who have had hour long conversations with her. Also well done to SAM MONTGOMERY and JAMES HARRINGTON for providing the most business so far!

There will be teachers popping into get their lunch and coffee and I really appreciate sixth form support on this. It is easier for many staff in that building to pop in instead of going to canteen. Please can sixth formers be patient with this and understanding.

Gap Year @ The Bank Of England

Our Gap Year programme is open to students who have just completed their A-level or equivalent (e.g. International or Welsh Baccalaureate, Scottish Higher, Irish Leaving Certificate or BTEC Nationals) studies who wish to gain work experience before a University course. It provides a valuable opportunity to gain exposure of work experience in a stimulating environment at the centre of the UK’s economy.

Gap Year opportunities are largely available in our Banking Services area undertaking operational Banking work. This involves processing of financial data, often to tight deadlines and requires a high level of accuracy. These roles will give you the opportunity to gain first hand experience of the banking processes of a major financial institution. In addition there are some research and clerical based opportunities in other areas of the Bank.

We offer opportunities for training and many students complete the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)  qualification during their placement.   Placements last for 51 weeks.

Our Gap Year students benefit from working in a professional environment and truly value the opportunity to gain practical work experience in a prestigious organisation. They also enjoy the working atmosphere and social interaction.

 The Gap Year programme offers you the opportunity to prepare for life at university and provides an excellent insight to the work of the UK’s Central Bank.  Previous particpants in the programme have said that gaining experience with the Bank really enhanced their university applications.

To apply for these positions you should have at least 180 UCAS points (either passed or predicted) from up to three A Levels or equivalent qualifications.

We are now open for applications for Gap Year positions starting in 2011.  The deadline for applications is 5pm on 28th February 2011.  The application form can be accessed here.

VetCam 2011 - Introduction to Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge University

Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th March 2011

Following the successful courses held here in recent years we are holding another two-day residential programme for Year 12 students interested in applying to study Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge University. The course will take place on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th March 2011. There will be an opportunity to visit the pre-clinical and clinical departments to give a taste of the course and meet with staff and current students. Places will be limited to 150 on the basis of first-come, first-served and it would be sensible to encourage only likely A-grade candidates to attend.  The 2011 course fee will be £150 for the all inclusive two-day course. This information is being sent to almost 4000 schools; however, by necessity the course is limited to 150 participants. It is always over-subscribed therefore we request that you send a maximum of two candidates from your institution. Those who do attend can collect information for any additional interested candidates and share it with them on their return. There will be no discrimination against any candidates who apply for Veterinary Medicine if they are unable to attend either this course or any other open days.   To avoid disappointment, please stress to them that early booking is essential. The course can be booked and paid for using a debit or credit card at https://sales.admin.cam.ac.uk/events/eventdetails.asp?eventid=165.  If this is not possible please contact us at tutorial.office@vet.cam.ac.uk and we will send you a booking form which can be posted back to us with a cheque.  Places are limited to 150 and are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. We will confirm your place BY EMAIL on receipt of payment. Unfortunately we are unable to consider faxed bookings.  We will keep an additional 15 names on a waiting list, in case of any cancellations. If you choose to cancel, a £15 cancellation fee will be charged and the remaining amount refunded to you by cheque.  All bookings received will be acknowledged.

Introduction to Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge University

We are offering a two-day residential programme for Year 12 students who are interested in applying to read Veterinary Medicine at Cambridge University in October 2012. The course will run over two days, commencing on Monday 28 March. You will have the opportunity to sample college life as well as visiting the pre-clinical departments and our facilities at the Veterinary School, where you are based during your clinical years. During the two days you will meet members of academic staff and current students and get a taste of the course. Visitors will stay in Queens' College.

Message from Miss. Beer

Thank you to everyone who supported the sixth form raffle. We raised over £300 and this money went towards buying the £100 vouchers, other prizes and to their sixth form ball. Thank you to Florence Farley who was the only person to donate a prize! As the sixth form were very mature and sensible, we will be getting our deposit back from the boat company and some of this will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.

Increase in UCAS Tariff Points

London South Bank University (LSBU) has revised its UCAS Tariff point entry requirements for some of its undergraduate programmes commencing in September 2011.

 

MESSAGE FROM LSBU:

Progression Accords with the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences at LSBU

 

As we have a progression accord with your institution, I wanted to make you aware of this and to reassure you that our old tariff points as stated in our progression accord will still apply to applicants, from your institution, who apply to one of our courses, in the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, for 2011 entry.

 

Therefore our Progression Accord will continue to work in the same way, as follows:

 

1. Guarantee of a conditional offer from LSBU if students apply through the progression for one of the following courses:
