Discretionary Learner Support (dLS) for 16-18 year olds

What is discretionary Learner Support (dLS)?
·         It is a one-off grant for students with identified and specific financial needs associated with the costs of learning or in cases of emergency with living costs.
·         It is especially for students who have experienced a sudden change in their circumstances (e.g. a loss of income or parent redundancy) that national schemes can not respond to.

BBC documentary

Educated and out of work? Up for hire?

The BBC is looking for young talented people between the ages of 18-24 who are desperate to find work. The producers have approached Prospects to see if we can help find participants to be filmed in July and August, for a documentary.

Producer Miles Carter said, “I really think this project will be great, not only to create awareness for young people but also for employers. We are looking for people who are talented, educated and out of work.”
Participants will benefit from intensive training and a chance to undertake real work experience, with the possibility of a job at the end. The documentary will then be shown to an invited audience to introduce a live debate, and representatives from Prospects will be asked to attend. The programme will be supported by a dedicated website where we can post information.
The producers are looking for young people from all parts of the country with many different experiences and backgrounds, who can answer yes to these questions.

• Are you a school leaver or graduate, unemployed for over a year?

• Would you like 40 years of career experience in four weeks, and the chance of a real job at the end of it?

Miles adds, “This exciting new series aims to give individuals with potential a genuine opportunity to find the right employer and start a new career”.

If you know a young person aged 18 - 24 who meets the criteria and might like to take part,
please contact Love Productions on 020 7067 4837 or email: miles@loveproductions.co.uk

Survey

We hope you will be able to assist with a short survey we are undertaking to elicit views from students in Years 12 & 13 about how they are going about choosing a university and how London compares with other English regions.

The survey has 11 questions and students can also enter a prize draw to win one of six Amazon vouchers, each worth £50.

The survey is anonymous and takes about 5 minutes. We would be most grateful if you could encourage a few of your Year 12 and Year 13 students to complete the survey which can be found at www.londonhigher.ac.uk/londonstudents.html by Friday 3 June 2011.

American Soccer Scholarships

If you are aware of 6th form students (male and female) who may be interested in applying for a soccer scholarship beginning August/September 2011 please have them/parents/guardians complete the online contact form at www.afssports.com as soon as possible.

  • Students should be very smart, serious about their education and play soccer at a high standard.

  • Students must be able to provide Video footage (highlights) of them playing competitive game(s) and as we are coming to the end of most soccer seasons here in the U.K. it would be wise for those who don’t have footage to take it now as this is the only way U.S. Coaches will be able to view the students skills as a soccer player.

  • The male soccer team coaches are looking for: 5 goalkeepers, 2 strikers, 1 left fullback, 1 Centre back and a number midfield players.

  • The female soccer team coaches are seeking 1 goalkeeper and players for various positions.

  • Parents/Guardians should be aware that for those who are offered a soccer scholarship it would be very unlikely to cover all costs and they should be prepared to contribute something towards their child’s education.

Young Journalists’ Academy

MESSAGE FROM: Young Journalists’ Academy

We have had a lot of strong applications for the 2011 Young Journalists' Academy Summer School, organised by Journalism Education in partnership with The Times, but are still accepting applications until Thursday 24 June. This is an excellent opportunity for students who are thinking about obtaining a career in the media, with our recent alumni study showing almost 90% of graduates have gone on to be published or do further work in the media.  (see: http://www.yja.org.uk/index.php/site/apply)

It is completely free of charge and takes place in Canary Wharf on 30 July to 6 August.

As a previous student said: ‘The opportunity to join the summer school was one I couldn’t miss, as it would get the ball rolling on my journalism career.’

The programme is open to 16- to 18-year-old London state school pupils who have the passion and the guts, but not ‘the right contacts’, to break into journalism. It is ideal for any student who is interested in a career in the media. The aim of the summer school is to offer a route into the competitive field of journalism. For more information about the programme, to download our brochure and to access the application form, please visit www.yja.org.uk. The final deadline for applications is Thursday 24 June.

Successful candidates will get a unique chance to meet some of Britain's most renowned journalists, to participate in media training workshops and to visit the headquarters of high profile media institutions. Past speakers include Decca Aitkenhead (The Guardian), Daniel Finkelstein (The Times), Simon Newman (Reuters), Simon Nixon (Wall Street Journal) and Dean Piper (Sunday Mirror).
