The Snake Pit

Would  you like to take part in the RAVENSBOURNE WINTER PROJECT - THE SNAKE PIT?

This is for Year 12 students interested in the following areas - Art & Design, Product Design, Fashion, Graphics, Broadcasting, Music & Sound Production.

The Snake Pit will take place over 2 days - the 13th & 14th December and will look great on UCAS applications.  If you  would like to take part please complete the attached application form and return it to Lucy Slater l.slater@rave.ac.uk by 23rd November at the latest.

Are you brave enough to enter the Snake Pit and face the Business Cobras?

The challenge - Working in small focus groups you will be asked to create and promote a fantastic new product/service that can be sold to tourists visiting London during the festive season.  This could be anything from a printed shopping bag, a stocking filler 'gadget', an app for phones showcasing the best places for festive shopping etc.  The choice is yours.....

The only criteria is that it MUST promote both London and the Winter Festive Season.

But the challenge doesn't end there.  Once you decide on what you want to sell then you have to produce the costings, market research and develop the pitch that will convince the Cobras that your idea/product is the best.

Many enter the Snake Pit, but only one group will win....will it be you?

Tuan and Hung do us proud!

On Tuesday 11th October, Tuan and Hung Lai accompanied by two teachers in the Maths faculty from Welling School, attended an awards ceremony at the UBS Headquarters in Moorgate, Central London. They had been nominated for an outstanding achievement and excellence award following their successful first year of A-Levels in Maths and the Sciences. They were recognised for not only being the first students within Welling to sit a Further Maths qualification alongside the standard Maths a-level but for achieving the top possible grade within both subjects. They are both predicted A* grades at A2.

During the awards ceremony they were spoken to by Dermot Shortt, global head of UBS Delta, who offered some excellent advice on how to get into the investment banking sector. They were then led through a networking session by Lyle Andrews, Head of Graduate recruitment for the firm, before finally being given the opportunity to immediately practice some of their newly learnt networking skills in a reception at the end of the evening with other prize winners and employees from UBS.

Hung and Tuan have completed their UCAS applications  and hope to read Mathematics at Cambridge University or another top achieving university.

New Bachelors degree in Liberal Arts

I’m writing to let you know about our new Bachelors degree in Liberal Arts, which will be of interest to your students. The degree allows students to combine a range of subjects including history, geography, politics, languages and religion. The key feature about this degree is that students will study a range of subjects in their first year before specializing by choosing a major and a minor subject. The degree programme is also distinctive in that it includes an optional internship module, the opportunity to study a language, and to spend time abroad at one of our partner institutions.

This is an exciting and challenging programme for bright and ambitious students. King’s is one of the most prestigious universities in the country (recently rated 27th in the world) and is in the UK’s top five for student employability post-graduation.

We are keen to encourage excellent applicants from all backgrounds, and so this year are offering up to five scholarships of £15,000 each to support students through their course. The applications will be judged on both academic merit, and parental income, so that we can support the best students who might not otherwise be able to attend the course.

You can find out much more information about the programme on our website (www.kcl.ac.uk/liberalarts). The Admissions Tutor for the degree will be running a webinar on 29 September at 6pm, to explain the programme and answer questions. If any of your students or staff would like to attend, please email liberalarts@kcl.ac.uk by Tuesday 27 September at 5pm, and we will send you a link and further instructions by email.

Best wishes,

Jan Palmowski

Sixth Form Hospital Work Experience

Gap Medics are offering an exciting project for your students that are looking to apply for university courses in either medicine, nursing or dentistry. We are running a special 1-week programme in India during the October and February half terms designed for your Year 12 students thinking of applying for a healthcare related degree to offer them much needed hospital work experience before they apply and to see if a career in healthcare appeals to them. It is also open to your Year 13 students who will have just submitted their UCAS forms if looking to apply for medicine or dentistry for entry in 2012 and will have upcoming interviews.

The placements are ideal for your Year 12 students to give them the desire and pre-requisite work experience they need to apply and its great for Year 13's to give them the confidence to excel in their interviews too.

Students will spend five days shadowing highly skilled doctors in their day-to-day work on a fully-supervised hospital placement. Students will also have the benefit of clinical teaching, safe and secure accommodation in our own students house, food, airport transfers in India, local orientations, 24/7 support from our teams in India and the UK and lots of help with preparations for their trip too.

The specifics of our India half term specials can be viewed on our website www.gapmedics.com or by clicking here.

Gap Medics are the leading provider of short-term healthcare work experience placements abroad and our programmes are are open to individuals, groups of students and are suitable for organised school trips too. Aside from our 1-week special programmes we have placements that can be started on any weekend of the year in 3 destinations so if your students cannot make the October or February programmes there is sure to be a placement that can fit around their availability. Students are free to contact us for any further information and can confirm their place on the programmes via the website too.

Best Wishes
